Since LCD is essentially a selective filter, and the display brightness produced by ambient lighting is often insufficient, a light source must be placed on the back of the LCD.     Early LCD backlights were mainly used in laptops or notebook computers. Since the display screens used in these devices consume 90% of the total available batteries, people are most concerned about efficiency.
 
    Recently, the main application of LCD has shifted to desktop computers, and the focus of LCD has also shifted from low power consumption to high brightness. Brightness and image quality have become primary issues. Of course, efficiency is still one of the factors that cannot be ignored, because users are more concerned about self-heating and power supply costs Organic Light Emitting Display.
 
1 Method of back lighting
 
    The electroluminescent (EL) back light source body is thin and light, providing uniform light. Its power consumption is very low, the required working voltage is 80～100Vac, the inverter that provides the working voltage can change the input of 5/12/24Vdc into AC output Thin Film Transistor.
 
    Due to the limited service life of the EL back light source (the average service life is 3000-5000 hours under the condition of 50% brightness, the service life will be greatly shortened at a higher brightness level), therefore, the ideal inverter for EL back lighting The device allows the output voltage and frequency to increase with the aging of the EL bulb, thereby prolonging the effective life of the display using the EL back-illuminated light source.
 
    EL back lighting is more suitable for small reflective LCD applications such as watches, digital desk clocks and monochrome PDAs that require extremely weak lighting for use in dim or dim light conditions. However, low efficiency, low brightness, and short lifetime make it unsuitable for transmissive back lighting applications such as large LCDs required for laptop computers and flat-panel desktop monitors.
 
    The service life of the LED back light source is longer than that of EL (more than 5000 hours), and it uses DC voltage, which is usually applied to small monochrome displays, such as front-end phones, remote controls, microwave ovens, and stereo audio equipment. However, its brightness is not enough to provide a back light source for a large transmissive display.
 
    The small cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) provides the brightness and lifetime (and light control capability) required for large LCDs, which is why it is still the most commonly used method of backlighting to this day. However, heat accumulation is a concern.　
 
     The back light source assembly has been increased from 1 or 2 CCFLs driven at relatively moderate power levels in the past to as many as 12 (or 16) tubes at 30W or 60W power. Because such a large amount of power is used in a relatively small space, the accumulation of heat makes all the components in the display back light source assembly at a stress level not seen in most early Lcd Module applications. Moreover, the electrical efficiency and light control capability are also close to the limit value.
